Sanremo Is the Flower of Riviera

Sanremo, is the flower of Riviera, is a wide gulf island between Cape Nero and Cape Verde. A city to leaf through, where its extremes touch and its most ancient part is known as "la Pigna". With its houses built one against the other in mutual defense, it dates back to the Middle Ages. It winds through steep little alleys, covered passageways, small squares, dominated from above by the baroque sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa (Our Lady of the Coast).
The modern part of the town, built astride the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to receive the peaceful "invaders" (aristocratic and rich globetrotters of the international "high society"), in a few years turned its fishing village into an elegant tourist center of world fame. Today, therefore, the city has a welcoming propensity, it receives visitors and tourists in every period of the year, and they are made to feel at home, to feel well and to have fun. In order to accomplish this without invading someone's privacy, it is necessary to have that kind of courtesy which cannot be improvised, but is learned gradually, one generation after the other, which is acquired also from people of different nations, by picking the best from each of them. It is a center of mundane life. Its most famous building is certainly the Casino, built in 1905, uncontested reign of green tables, roulettes and modern slot-machines. There are frequent and selected events: one above all, famous all over the world, is the Festival of the Italian Song, created in 1951 and today "the festival" by antonomasia.
The artistic and cultural life of the city, instead, revolves around the concert season (Sanremo has a permanent symphonic orchestra), theater performances, literary Tuesdays, meeting with Authors, art shows and parades.
Among the sport events, one must not miss the "Classicissima" (the most classic) Milan-Sanremo bicycle race, car rallies and the sailing Criterium at Easter. For quality shopping there are elegant boutiques opened in the downtown streets; for all kinds of shopping one must go to the more commercial Palazzo and Corradi streets and, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, in the morning, to the colorful peddlers' market of Piazza EroiSanremesi, close to the pro-cathedral of San Siro. Sanremo is anyhow a "city of flowers" and it owes a great part of its richness and its economic welfare to the activity of flower growing. Greenhouses dominate the landscape and the floricultural sector can count on about two thousand producers, besides numerous forwarding agents.
